Presenter: Morag Mackay, V.N., Cert.Ed., RLATG, SRS, NCPT - Department of Laboratory Animal Care Senior Director, La Jolla Institute for Immunology
Moderator: Cindy A. Buckmaster, PhD, CMAR, RLATG
Overview: It’s normal to experience emotions at work: frustration, anxiety, anger, fear, excitement, and joy, to name a few. However, how leaders handle these feelings can be crucial to building up or wearing down employees. And leaders must develop the ability to regulate their own emotions and the emotional well-being of their team members, to help reduce the levels of negative and useless emotions in the workplace. During this session, we will discuss emotional management skills and how to achieve psychological well-being in the workplace without the need to “leave your emotions at the door.” The focus will be on leading your team with emotional intelligence with the aim of achieving cooperation, connection, and collaboration resulting in a more emotionally healthy workplace.

Presenter: Lisa M. Kelly, M.Ed., R-LATG, Director of Learning Management System Administration, Human Resources, University of Georgia
Moderator: Cindy A. Buckmaster, PhD, CMAR, RLATG
Overview: Words matter! They are especially important when communicating about a stigmatized profession, such as laboratory animal science. Yet, when we discuss one of the most pressing mental health issues faced by lab animal professionals, we often borrow misleading terms, such as compassion fatigue, that can contribute to public misunderstanding and censure. It is critical that we develop and adopt our own precise terminology to articulate the mental health challenges associated with working with lab animals. In this session, Lisa M. Kelly, M.Ed., R-LATG, of University of Georgia will explain why the current terminology hampers our efforts to educate the public about our vital, life-saving work. She will propose and advocate for a more accurate term, Traumatic Compassion Dissonance, that better captures the nuances of this phenomenon. By carefully selecting our words, we can begin to humanize this critical concern in our industry.

Overview: The mammalian phenotype is largely driven by the combination of host and microbiome genes. The microbiomes of free-living organisms (including wild mice and humans) co-evolved with their respective hosts over thousands of years by natural selection, creating a symbiotic host-microbe relationship integral to host physiology. The laboratory mouse microbiome evolved over much shorter periods in a sanitized and restrictive environment devoid of numerous microorganisms. For the past several years, one of Georgia State University’s (GSU) investigators (who studies inflammation and translational immunology) has had an ongoing study concerning the “wilding” of the laboratory mouse gut microbiota. We will discuss the mechanisms of "wilding" utilized, the success of the mechanisms realized (shift in gut microbiota and immune phenotype), applications of the model, and challenges along the way.

Presenter: Jarrod Nichol, MBA, PMP, CLSSBB - Director, Administration and Operations, McGill University and President, Vivarium Operational Excellence Network
Moderator: Cindy A. Buckmaster, PhD, CMAR, RLATG
Overview: The laboratory animal science industry is a highly regulated industry for good reason; we must do everything in our power to protect the animals under our care. We follow the 3Rs as closely as possible, we continue to refine practices to ensure we provide the best animal welfare possible, and are constantly looking at new ways to provide animal enrichment and support. Animals always come first, no one will ever argue that; but where are your caretakers in all of this? Do you have any regulations, policies, or procedures in place to ensure you also care for them? Far too often the front-line animal care workers are some of the lowest-paid employees in the organization but also act as the first responders for animal care services. When animal-related policies change, they’re the first ones retrained to put them into practice. They frequently must put in overtime and work through holidays, and when the going gets tough, they’re the ones who have to handle all the emergencies. With all this in mind, how do you keep these folks motivated? How do you ensure they thrive in often less than optimal working conditions? How do you make sure change is handled optimally? How do you have multiple generations work together in an efficient and cohesive manner? This presentation will focus on developing internal policies and procedures specifically for your staff. We will discuss some quick wins that can help set your animal care program on the path to true employee engagement that will have a huge positive impact on your overall animal care program and help provide the best possible care for your animals.

Presenter: Robert C. Dysko, DVM, DACLAM - Clinical Professor, Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM), University of Michigan
Moderator: Cindy A. Buckmaster, PhD, CMAR, RLATG
Overview: There are no engineering standards for the drinking water provided to research animals; thus, it is left to each institution's professional judgment to determine the drinking water's overall quality. This decision is based on a wide variety of factors including species differences and their general health status (e.g., SPF, immunocompromised, genetically modified), quality and conditioning of source water, and multiple means to modify drinking water at an institution before final delivery. In this session, Dr. Robert C. Dysko will provide background information on possible water sources as well as present options and recommendations regarding available methods to treat and condition drinking water at an institution.

Moderator: Cindy A. Buckmaster, PhD, CMAR, RLATG
Overview: Across the world, all pieces of legislation include specific requirements on animal care and use program areas. When these requirements are rigid and measurable, they’re called engineering standards (e.g., minimum cage dimensions). In contrast, performance standards focus on the outcome of a process rather than on the process used to achieve that outcome. For this approach to be successful and effective, the desired outcome must be defined in advance, and a system implemented, to periodically evaluate that this outcome is satisfactorily achieved. In an environment with diverse legal international requirements, the performance-based approach has been successfully implemented not only to evaluate all animal care and use areas for a long time by AAALAC International, but also by institutions to implement effective procedures in the animal program. In this session, the use of performance standards by AAALAC International and institutional animal care and use programs, in general, will be discussed, as an example to follow for professionals and institutions participating in the AAALAC accreditation program or just willing to implement effective practices.

Overview: Occupational Health and Safety Programs (OHSP) have historically presented a challenge for animal care and use programs across the spectrum of organizations. Successful OHSP do not just happen. They require strategic training and coordination from several stakeholders. This interplay of industry professionals can produce its own set of obstacles and even frustrations. However, we surmise that historical OHSP were not designed to serve the 2023 workforce. Failure to recognize this discrepancy could present a new set of challenges. It behooves traditional OHSP to be reassessed amongst organizations that strive to remain competitive and culturally relevant. Stakeholders in OHSP must reexamine their programs, ensuring a holistic structure that best serves their organization.
