  • Open to any individual who is a Manager or Supervisor within a laboratory animal science facility.
  • Must be an Active member of MNYBAALAS.
  • AALAS Certifications (ALAT, LAT, LATg) are preferred.

Award Focus:
This award recognizes excellence in management and leadership within the laboratory animal science community.

Selection Criteria: Nominees will be evaluated on demonstrated impact in the following areas:

  • Positive Leadership: Inspires and motivates team members through a consistently positive attitude, fostering encouragement and recognition.
  • Respectful & Effective Communication: Practices transparency, honesty, and accountability, while listening attentively and communicating clearly to build trust, credibility, and open dialogue.

 This award recognizes a vendor representative who has demonstrated exceptional service, professionalism, and dedication to supporting the LAS community.

  • Award Eligibility: 
    • Nominee must be employed by an active vendor member of MNYBAALAS.
    • Vendor membership must be in good standing at the time of nomination.
  • Selection Criteria:
    • Provides consistent, high-quality service to research institutions.
    • Demonstrates knowledge, integrity, and professionalism in vendor–client interactions with institutions
    • Actively supports the mission of MNYBAALAS (e.g., through participation in events, sponsorships, or educational contributions).
    • Goes above and beyond in assisting the laboratory animal science community, such as troubleshooting, training, or offering technical expertise.
    • Demonstrates long-term commitment to building positive relationships with research facilities.

Fred Quimby Veterinarian of The Year Award

 Award Eligibility:

  • Open to any full-time veterinarian employed at an MNYBAALAS member institution.
  • Must provide a current CV and photo of veterinary license.
  • Attendance at MNYBAALAS meetings is required.

Award Focus:
This award honors a veterinarian who has made exemplary contributions to laboratory animal science, demonstrating leadership, expertise, and dedication to advancing animal care and welfare.

Selection Criteria: 

  • Excellence in Animal Care: Provides outstanding veterinary care, ensuring the health, well-being, and welfare of laboratory animals.
  • Advancement of Veterinary Science: Contributes to research, develops new protocols, or introduces creative approaches (e.g., surgical techniques, diagnostics, treatment plans) that enhance veterinary practices and benefit laboratory animals.
  • Mentorship and Education: Supports colleagues, students, and staff through mentorship and training, fostering professional growth and promoting best practices in laboratory animal care.
  • Leadership and Collaboration: Serves as a leader and collaborator within their institution, building strong interdisciplinary relationships among veterinary staff, researchers, and animal care teams.
  • Commitment to the 3Rs:  Actively promotes Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement (3Rs) while helping develop or implement institutional policies that uphold the highest standards of animal welfare and regulatory compliance.
  • Research Contributions: Plays a key role in research projects that advance veterinary knowledge or improve research outcomes while safeguarding animal welfare.

The Caroline Murray Training and Education Award

  • Open to active MNYBAALAS members with at least five years of experience in lab animal education and training.
  • A significant portion of job responsibilities must involve training and education.
  • Minimum Registered LATg and/or other advanced credentials.
  • Engage in outreach and certification development activities at MNYBAALAS events or other relevant forums.

Award Focus:
This award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to education and training in laboratory animal science. Recipients demonstrate leadership, innovation, and dedication in developing and delivering educational programs that enhance knowledge, technical skills, and professional growth in the field.

Selection Criteria:

  • Development of Educational Materials: Created innovative and effective materials (manuals, guides, e-learning tools) that promote technical proficiency and critical thinking.
  • Engagement and Mentorship: Inspired and motivated trainees, fostering problem-solving and hands-on proficiency, while mentoring the next generation of professionals.
  • Leadership in Training Programs: Designed, led, or coordinated impactful workshops, seminars, conferences, or online platforms that expanded professional development opportunities.
  • Commitment to Continuous Learning: Demonstrated personal dedication to ongoing education through active participation in professional organizations, certifications, and staying current with advances in the field.

This award honors individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of LAS through their essential work in supportive roles. While they may not be directly involved in animal care or research, their efforts have strengthened programs, improved operations, managed resources effectively, and advanced institutional success. Their behind-the-scenes contributions have had a tangible impact on the institution’s mission and goals.

Selection Criteria: 

Nominees will be evaluated based on demonstrated impact in the following areas:

  • Program Improvement: Actively enhanced institutional programs through process improvements, new initiatives, or streamlined operations.
  • Resource Management & Efficiency: Manage and optimized resources (budget, staffing, logistics) to ensure smooth and effective program function.
